Down in the river to play

The dogs were getting all hot and bothered the other day, so rather than a post-lunch (mine, not theirs) walk across the field, I took them down to the river.

It was a peaceful scene, the sun being in the right place in the sky to be behind the trees that drape so elegantly over the river’s curves, so the sunlight almost fell between the branches and the leaves into the water.

But then this happened…

I wish I had a decent camera because Snipe played for ages, fetching (and retrieving, I’m proud to announce) sticks, racing in just for the pure hell of it, losing the stick and swimming in circles after her own tail until she found it… All the sort of things you simply can’t capture properly on a phone camera. Ah well, t’is the way of these things. I was there, laughing out loud with my dog as she lived simply and purely for the moment, and I’d much rather be there, doing that, than reading about it on someone else’s blog.

Hang on, I can hear you asking. What about Midge?

Ah yes. Midge. You see, our dogs may love one another dearly, but they’re as alike as chalk and cheese. Whereas Snipe’s been in love with water since she first went to the sea in the middle of winter as a pup, Midge hates getting her tootsies wet. Or cold. So while Snipe races in and out like a sponge with legs, Midge just watches.

It’s not as though she can’t swim. A few weeks ago, I picked her up and plopped her in the river. The second she realised her feet weren’t in contact with anything solid, she swam for the bank. On the other side of the river. An she was so adamant that there was no way in hell she was swimming back that she jumped up and walked along the overhanging branch in the photo below. So there endeth that lesson – she ain’t no water dog!

They sound just like my in-laws dogs, Holly (who has more than a bit of lab about her) will play for ages in the water, chasing sticks and swimming after ducks. Whereas Jackie will just stand on the edge and watch.

  2. I always feel sorry for the anti-water dogs as they always look so miserable when you see them at the beach.
