Rats!

As cute as she may look when she’s curled up in her bed or sitting on your lap, Midge is a “real” Jack Russell Terrier, with razor sharp instincts and lightning fast reactions. She’s two and a half now, and in that time has killed more than her fair share of mice, voles and rabbits (and, sadly, chickens), not to mention all the toads she’s found in the field, which having found out what happens if you attack them, she won’t touch but still loves hunting! Oh, and there was the snake she found, but that’s a blog post for another day.

So yes, she’s a proper little terrier and never was I more pleased about that than yesterday afternoon when I spotted a rat at the farm! It heard my footsteps and sought refuge but having seen its hiding place, I ran and got the dogs. When it decided to take its chances and scuttled off at top speed for the hedge, Midge shot off after it and successfully caught and killed it in seconds!

Snipe, caught up in all the excitement but not knowing what to do, ran off and came back with a stick…

  1. Yey, another ‘real’ pet. Our old boy Sam would definitely have followed Snipe’s example rather than Midges.

Well done Midge! Jasper would’ve failed miserably, not even bringing a stick. Mind you, this morning he was barking like mad at something, I let him out and he charged about like a mad thing, hair standing on end. Then I saw a roaming hunting dog just casually wandering away down the lane… which Jasper never even saw. Useless!

Snipe has just got to be a Labrador?

We have owned three, all as daft as brushes! I now have two Jack Russells and would never be without them, and that is comeing from one who has never been particulaly fond of small dogs. Once they have got their teeth into you…..

Great characters! Mine will hunt anything from beetles to rabbits, thankfully they love the chickens!

  4. Lec, the more you talk about him, the more I think I would have liked your Sam.

Jan, hee hee, Xnipe was barking at a helicopter the other day :s

Jon, how did you guess?! Though, to be fair, she *did* find a dead robin in the field last winter and dropped it at my feet. On my birthday as well! Sadly, Midge loves the chickens as well 😮

  5. Sadie, one of our past Bull Terriers, was an exceptional ratter. However, mice seemed to be beneath her dignity to chase. None of our BTs would hunt mice…go figure.

Squirrels? They are insane about chasing the tree rats and one of the old ones even tried climbing the trees after them. Sadly, he failed miserably every time but it didn’t stop the attempts.

  6. yay well done 🙂
