I’ve spoken to a lot of people recently who have all uttered the immortal line “It’s too hot”. Personally, I love the heat and as much as I may complain about watering the veggies and carrying endless buckets of water to the pigs, isn’t life better when the sun shines? Having said that, I hope we get some rain this weekend as the grass could do with it. And yes, I would like a break from watering. But then the sun can come out again!
The animals are all a lot happier now that summer’s just round the corner, though the pigs are sulking because I haven’t moved them onto the long grass in the middle of the field. That area is extremely fertile as it gets very wet, which makes it ideal grazing, but has the potential to turn into a bog if I graze it too soon, hence waiting until we’re properly into summer before putting the pigs on it.
The only downside about the heat is that I’m having trouble sleeping, or rather, getting back to sleep if I wake up because I’m too hot. I woke up this morning at about three o’clock and after spending an hour alternating between too hot under the duvet but too chilly out of it (not to mention being the victim of cat attacks on my feet), I gave up and am now looking for matchsticks to hold my eyelids open.
Still, at least the dogs are getting lots of walks down to the river so they can cool off and burn off some energy under the cool shade of the trees (and in the water!). Even Midge has decided she’s happy to get her tootsies wet and has started venturing in to cool down, though only up to her knees. Snipe doesn’t understand why Midge won’t go any deeper and spends ages trying to persuade to stop paddling and start swimming!
I’m just happy that after two years of winter-white skin, I’m now sporting an impressive tan, made all the better by my investment in some cheap sleeveless t-shirts. Sadly, thanks to the pigs, chickens and brambles, I daren’t expose my legs so they are the traditional bright-white-can-be-seen-from-space colour. I consider this an offering to the gods of the British summer.
